in counter flow cold water come in contact with hot water for longer time ...fresh cold water always encounter with hot water in counter flow then in co flow in which temperature of hot water drop suddenly .

In counter flow the difference in temperature between hot fluid & cold is almost const. and so that heat transfer takes place longer but in case of parallel flow the difference in temperature continuously decreases so that transfer of heat decreases continuously.
